I don’t agree with everything the HRC supports or some of their tactics. Some of those things I don’t feel are in my own best interest nor in the interest of my fellow GLBT people. I do however agree with the Matthew Shepard Act, ENDA and the Repeal of the DADT. The following is a letter I mailed to my Senators and House Reps today regarding the Matthew Shepard Act that is currently in jeopardy. I ask if you support the Matthew Shepard Act that you do the same.
If you want to get involved you can do this on your own or you can register with the HRC, who will send you letters that you can edit to your liking. My letter below is an edited version of the one I was sent by the HRC.
I always edit any preform letters I get because it’s a good idea that they’re not all the same and I also feel I have to be a little extra tough with my Texas Representatives – imagine that!
Here is my letter:
Subject: Please help save the Matthew Shepard Act
Dear Law Maker,
As a constituent and a supporter of the Human Rights Campaign, I’m writing to urge you to do everything in your power to make sure the Matthew Shepard Act (S 1105) is included in the conference report of the Department of Defense Authorization Act (HR 1585) and sent to the President’s desk for signature.
One hate crime is committed in this country every hour. Whether these crimes are based on race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, gender, or gender identity, they are not acceptable, they are not American, and they need a strong Federal law in response.
Please lobby your colleagues to ensure that the Matthew Shepard Act makes it to the President’s desk this year.
With the recent release of the new FBI reports on Hate Crimes it is even more evident this legislation is desperately needed.
I will go one step further and say that in my opinion the lack of full inclusion of all minority groups in the current hate crimes laws is unconstitutional and infringes on the equality of basic rights of these Americans.
To state that we already have laws in place that cover all crimes is a baseless excuse for lack of support of our American minorities and their rights under equality for all Americans.
Hate biased crimes that affect minority groups are tragic and serve no purpose other than to avenge one’s own beliefs. Legislation does not only help investigation in such crimes it also sends a message that it is not OK to commit these crimes.
Your heartfelt support is greatly needed.
Thank you,
