Joe posted this proposed Marriage Equality flag on his blog today. The flag comes from a reader, Mark. Mark offers this explanation:
The flag is based in the custom of 19th century suffragettes. At their annual convention they would add a star to the flag for each state that had adopted a women’s right to vote. Although there is no official order – the stars are generally read right to left in the order they were admitted to the Union. Represented are – Massachusetts and Connecticut.
No! No! and NO!
Originality is the only thing that’s going accomplish marriage equality. It’s time to stand up and be our own! No more, "Gay is the new black," etc.
No one likes it when we put our quest of freedoms and equality on the backs of others that made their own way.
People will look at this and think “All this shows is that they have no backbone of their own.” Can you say… copycat?
Seriously people, stop jumping on the bandwagon and start driving the damn thing.
Lastly, we don’t need another flag. What we need is a real down-to-earth grassroots movement that encompasses the compassion of people from all races, all genders, all religious systems and all walks of life.
If we adopt a marriage equality flag then we’ll also have to adopt one for employment, hate crimes, military equality, etc. The list goes on and on. We already have our Pride flag. Leave it at that and don’t diminish its importance or symbolism by creating a new one for every battle we face in our war on equality.
Other than all that, I like the flag. It’s a great graphical work and has significant meaning. But it also has the potential of being too easily used against us and thrown back in our faces. Pissing people off doesn’t exactly get us kisses on the cheek.
