Don’t be too surprised but Bill O’Reilly of FOX News is doing his dirtiest to fuel the fire between Gays and Blacks over the recent passage of Proposition 8 in California. As reported previously here on LikaStarr.com 70% of African Americans voted for the measure to amend the state’s constitution banning same-sex marriage. Gay marriage was upheld in a supreme court ruling earlier this year and 1000′s of same-sex couples took advantage by making their commitments to each other recognized under the new law. Those couples were left feeling insecure wandering what will happen to their marriages now that California decided to vote to take away those rights.
California voted on Prop 8 November 4th during the national election. After the results were looking grim for gays and their rights to marry, many gays were feeling disappointment while others hung on to the bitter end hoping the results would swing in their favor. As the exit polls came in it became quite clear that the deciding factor may have come from African American voters with over 70% fo them voting for the measure. Via the various gay blogs, gays became blaming blacks for the passage. Some comments directly lashed out at blacks as they felt cheated by a minority group that had previously battled it’s own equality movement in civil rights.
The sheer percentage of blacks who voted for Prop 8 does does look daunting. However, in truth the black population made up only a small part of the total votes in the election. It has not been determined if blacks were actually the deciding factor in Proposition 8′s success.
Regardless of the capacity blacks played in the passage of Prop 8 one minority group attacking the other is not the answer to an amicable resolution. While blame does need to placed where it belongs it should only server as an avenue of where work for equality needs to be focused.
This author condemns Bill O’Reilly in the video above. It is a clear message to pit one group against another in an effort to aid in destruction of an already crippled cultural issue. It’s pretty damn sad when a national network allows one of its own popular hosts purposely pour salt in an open wound. For that Mr. O’Reilly — You Suck!
