August, 2007 the Atlanta City council will hear an ordinance proposed by City Councilman C.T Martin, an African American plans to go all out push awareness. He plans to lobby churches, civil rights groups and neighborhood organizations.

The ordinance targets young men who sport low rise pants exposing one or more under garments worn underneath. Martin says sagging jeans are an “epidemic” and a “major concern” in cities across the nation. Though the target is towards young men, women won’t get off so easily either. Women wouldn’t be allowed to expose thong straps or wear sports jogging bras — and — not even the strap of a bra could be exposed! The ordinance states “the indecent exposure of his or her undergarments” would be unlawful in a public place.
The Councilman Marting leverage: “Little children see it and want to adopt it, thinking it’s the in thing,” Martin said Wednesday. “I don’t want young people thinking that half-dressing is the way to go. I want them to think about their future.”
If passed the ordinance would be included with the city’s indecent exposure laws that make it a criminal act to expose or fondle one’s genitals in a public place or the exposure and or fondling of the female breast. According to Martin, there would be no jail time for exposing your undies but rather a to-be-determined set fine.
There are already racism allegations in response to the proposed ordinance. Debbie Seagraves, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia, says a legislation that imposes a city wide dress code would not be upheld in a court challenge. She further states; “This is a racial profiling bill that promotes and establishes a framework for an additional type of racial profiling” because this youth fashion statement arose out of the black community.

The Lika Take — There’s a silver lining in every dark cloud. If this does pass, my fear is that it will spread across the nation…especially in the southern states. I admit I don’t usually like the baggy-jeans-puffed-up-and-out-boxers look but at the same time I am strongly against any government entity telling us how and what we can or cannot wear — Damn It!
This proposed law only states it would be illegal to expose undergarments. Then don’t where them at all. Go Commando! — Now that’s a sexy silver lining. But only if you’re a hot young adult who’s in shape…show some crackage! No fat plumber butts please — ick!
